Jurong Bird Park is one of my favorite attractions in Singapore. If your planning to go here, I advise you to alot 1 whole day for Jurong Bird Park. To get to Jurong Bird Park by public transport, you can take either the MRT or by bus. I took the MRT and alighted at Boon Lay Station and transfered to SBS number 194 or 251 at the Boon Lay Bus Interchange. You can also take the bus serviced by Bushub Services PVT. Jurong Bird Park boasts 4 Free Flight Aviaries: African Waterfall Aviary, Jungle Jewels Flight Aviary, Lori Loft and Southeast Asian Bird Aviary.

African Waterfall Aviary is inspired by African Tropical rainforest which is home to 50 species of birds, comprising of Starlings, Turacos, Carmine Bee-eaters, Rollers, Red and Yellow Barbet, Whydahs, Weavers, Parrots, White-Faced Tree Ducks, Helmeted Guinea fowls, South African Crowned Cranes and Egyptian Geese to name a few other special features include: two Observation Posts also part of the shelter area, where one can sit and take a leisurely break from the climb. From these posts, one can view the waterfall and observe exceptionally shy birds at close proximity. African roots take pride in this lovely and scenic walk-in aviary, considered until today the worlds largest. Visitors can make a choice of arriving on foot or via the African Waterfall Aviary station.

Jungle Jewels Waterfall Aviary is designed to create an environment where visitors can observe at close proximity a fraction of the amazing diversity and complexity of the South American rainforest. The intimate walk-in aviary allows one to meander and carefully observe the seemingly shy residents at first glance. Closer inspection and with your eyes high up on treetops and taller plants will reveal fruit-eaters like the Tanagers and Contingas. Other species you may find include the Violaceous Euphonia, Red-Crested Cardinals, Yellow-hooded Blackbirds and so much more.

Among the Four Free Flight Aviaries, my fave is the Lory Loft! Jurong Bird Park's Lory Aviary is The World's Largest which houses close to a thousand colorful Lories!

Southeast Asia is home to over 1,000 species of birds from a global total of 8,500 species. The Jurong Bird Park has a collection of about 260 Southeast Asian species; one of the world’s largest collection.The Southeast Asian Birds Aviary is a showcase of the region’s exotic and endangered species.

Getting There: It's a 5 minute walk from the Chinese Garden MRT Station (EW25)

It was a gloomy day and the sky started pouring. I was late for our 10am meet up with Mark and Kay at the Chinese Garden MRT Station looking for my wallet. I arrived at 10:45 and gladly the rain had stopped. Kay, smiling and trying to fade the feeling of boredome, then gave me 2 buns of bread which they set aside for me knowing I haven't eaten my breakfast yet. Mark, Kay and her Japanese friend had been waiting for me for 45mins. Sorry guys! hehehe. So we then strolled our way inside the Chinese Garden!

The Chinese Garden was built in 1975 designed by Prof Yuen-chen Yu, a well-known architect from Taiwan. A signature architectural building of the Chinese is the pagoda, used in ancient times by Buddhists to keep human bones. The seven-storey pagoda “Ru Yun Ta” follows the style of Ling Ku Temple Pagoda in Nanjing.

Two traditional features of Chinese architecture are the “Yao-Yueh Fang” (Stone Boat) and the “Ming Hsiang Hsieh” (Tea House), the latter a miniature structure following the style of the elaborate, winding gallery at the Summer Palace.

Apart from buildings, gardens too are a constant motif in the Chinese Garden. Around the Chinese pavilion, plateau and tower are woven plants, rocks, a winding stream and footpaths, to create a harmonious scene. A Suzhou-style Bonsai Garden, built at a cost of SGD 3.8 million, houses some 1,000 bansais imported mostly from China. A Bonsai Training Centre will be launched with resident experts from Shanghai and Suzhou to teach visitors the delicate art of caring for bonsai.

Backpackers' Guide to HK

As requested, Backpackers' Basic Guide to Hong Kong!

I have been to Hong Kong 5 times already but it's as intriguing and fascinating as my first visit. My family, friends and I always take a direct flight from Cebu to Hong Kong via Cebu Pacific Air. You could check Cebu Pacific Airfares on www.cebupacificair.com and book your tickets there.

TIP: A Cebu Pacific Agent told us that on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest flights on most Cebu Pacific Destination. And before boarding, you will be paying a terminal fee of PHP550.00 and Philippine Travel Tax of 1620php per person.

And before flying to Hong Kong you should remember to book a Hotel or Hostel. For budget travellers like me and my friends, we choose to stay in a hostel since its cheap and its the best way to mingle with other backpackers and tourists from around the globe. We always stay at Ah Shan Dragon Inn Hostel in Mongkok which costs 100HKD per person per night for a 4-bed-room(if you are travelling with 3 other companions) or 180 for a single bed room. It's best to book a 4- bed- room for 400HKD (updated rate 08-08-09) per night for the entire room if your travelling with 3 other backpackers to save. Book by clicking Ah Shan Dragon Inn. This hostel has been highly recommended for most tourists since it's in the heart of downtown Mongkok, probably the center for night markets(tiangge) and its very near the MTR station. Amenities include, free Internet Access( 2 Desktop Computers on the common room), Rooms has hot water bath, free drinking water, fridge, AC, TV, Fresh towels daily and slippers. You could also book a hostel of your choice at www.hostels.com.

TIP: Check in and check out time for most hostels in HK are at 1PM. But you could stay in the common area til check in Time.

Before flying, its important to bring the basics during travelling
1. Medicine kit ( Paracetamols, Loperamide, Pain relievers, Salompas, Menthol rubs(vicks), bandaids and etc.) -- Its important to bring Loperamide( Diatabs/Imodium for Diarrhea) since you will be eating food that might be unfamiliar and might cause diarrhea. During your travel you would also do long walks and your feet and legs will surely hurt. So be sure to put on very comfortable and light shoes while travelling. And if you'll be partying during the night you could put a pair of party shoes on your travel bag. A menthol rub, like vicks would be very helpful to soothe those tired and aching legs and feet. Salompas would also be helpful in soothing your aching back.

2. Travel toothbrush, Shampoo sachets, Shaver, Soap, deodorant etc....

3. Travel Documents - Passport, Plane TIcket and 2nd Identification Card(Driver's License, Postal Id, SSS ID, etc.) before travelling, you need to make 2 photocopies of your passport and identification card and keep a copy on your travel bag and 1 for your family in the Philippines. this is important because you will be bringing your passport with you anywhere you go while your travelling around HK and you might loose your passport and for faster processing of your affidavit, you'll have a spare copy of your travel documents with you.

Cebu Pacific Flights from Cebu to Hong Kong arrives at HK International at around 12:45AM and since there's no MTR transport after 12MN, we would sleep at the airport and wait for 6AM for the Airport Express to Central Station.

TIP: If you are planning to sleep in your booked hotel/ Hostel right after you arrived at the airport and you arrived after 12MN, your only choice of transport is a taxi or hotel bus. A Taxi will cost you HKD400 from the airport to Kowloon, thats around PHP2400.00. Hotel buses are free. And if you will be riding the public transport, which runs from 6AM to 12MN, be sure to purchase the 3 Day Electronic Unlimited Octopus Card for HKD300.00(updated price 08-08-09) inclusive of roundtrip airport express and 3 day unlimited MTR rides.HKD50 will be refunded upon surrendering the octopus card upon leaving HK International Airport which could be claimed at the Airport Express counter on the ground level of the HK Intl. Airport. That would save you much money on transportation when going around HK. And If you are staying for more than 3 days, you could purchase a HKD55.00 (updated price 08-08-09) 1 Day Unlimited MTR Ride.You could keep the MTR Card after as a souvineer. The 3 day unlimited card could just be tapped on the MTR Station entrance and for the 1 way ticket and 1 day unlimited cards, you need to put it on the card slot and get the card back because you need it when you exit the station. Be sure you get tourist maps at Map stands inside the airport to guide you on where to go when your in Hong Kong. Don't worry they're free! Maps at 711 shops are for sale, so be sure you get your free maps inside the airport before lining up for immigration.

Sumilon Adventure Part 2: Embracing the Charm That is Sumilon!

Before you proceed reading this entry, grab your backpack and click on PART 1 of our Sumilon Adventure! But if you have read Part 1 of our Sumilon Adventure, then join Doyzkie the Explorer as we discover the wonders of what Sumilon Island has to offer!

Our 15 minute pumpboat ride just ended and as we disembark the boat, we were greeted by Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort Staff. It was still gloomy and no sign of Mr. Golden Sun but was still looking forward to all the activities we can do on the island. We then walked our way up to a the Island Pavilion, the resort restaurant, to grab some munchees before we start going around the island.

We munched on a Tuna sandwhich and fries for our mawnin snacks! Yum!

After eating our sumptuous tuna sandwhich, we checked out the room and the facilities of the Island Resort. Sumilon Bluewater Island resort has 14(fourteen) 48sqm rooms which can accomodate 3 guests per room.

Room features a private veranda with lounge chairs, Private toilet and hot and cold shower, mini bar, ceiling fan, WiFi Connection, telephone and airconditioning.

After checking out the comfy rooms, we headed back to The Island Pavilion for lunch. Island Pavilion serves a delectable fair of local and international cuisine. We were delighted with a lunch buffet!

After our hefty lunch, Atty. Ethelbert, McBilly and I went to Aquamania to get our snorkel gear and life vest. We then started snorkling and saw some corals and fishes but gave up after 20minutes because waves were big and strong.

We then went to the Lagoon teeming with high mangroves to kayak!

After we took pictures on the mangrove, we then shifted to swimming in the infinity pool and relaxed at the Jacuzzi!

Surrounding the infinity pool are stairs heading down to a "chill cliff" where you can just sit down and enjoy the beautiful sea view and fresh air.

Want a glass of margarita ora shot of tequlia? Order some refreshments and drinks at the bar beside the Island Pavillion.

Chill chairs under the green shades of island trees are perfect when your reading a book, playing favorite games on psp or nintendo ds or even checking your facebook account with the resort's Wifi connection.

We then went to sand bar, where we spent most of the afternoon enjoying the big waves and the strong winds!

Sumilon sand bar changes shapes and shifts locations around the island depending on the season.

Since the wind was strong and waves were getting bigger due to tropical depression, we headed back to the infinity pool and enjoyed the last few hours of our day tour swimming.

It was 5pm and its time to pack up. But before leaving the island, we had carbonara and tea for our afternoon snacks! Then as I packed my wet boxer (which Wil used because she did not bring swimming clothes) and my boardshorts in my yellow SM plastic Bag, I swore I'd be back!

As Doyzkie and Friends embarked the pumpboat bringing us back to Oslob, I took this pic of a Korean couple having fun and enjoying the beautiful scenery of Sumilon Island! Aneyong hasseyo!

To Sumilon We Go!

1st of August 2009, it was a gloomy and rainy Saturday morning yet I was excited to enjoy and experience Sumilon! I woke up at 430am and grabbed a pair of board shorts, an extra shirt, a pair of boxers, sunblock and deodorant and slipped it on my camera bag.

Sumilon is about 2.5 to 3.5 hours from Cebu City depending on your mode of transportation. If your renting a car/van (renting a car, one way is about 2,700php/ Van one way is 4800php), it would take you 2-3.5 hours to get to Oslob which is the jump off point to Sumilon Island. You could also take a VHire from the Southbus Terminal which costs 200 per person one way and takes you 3 hours to get to Oslob. Another alternative and the cheapest way to get to Oslob is to take Ceres Liner Bus which would take you to Oslob for just 90php for airconditioned buses and 45php for the non-airconditioned bus. Frequency of the Ceres bus liners leaving the South bus terminal to Oslob would be every hour for the airconditioned buses and every 30minutes for the non airconditioned buses. Estimated travel time for buses to arrive at Oslob would be 3.5hours.

Long trips could sometimes make you dizzy so be sure to bring a mint rub or drink Bonamine to prevent motion sickness and fully enjoy the trip.

My friends and I, took private/rented vans and assembled at SM Northwing Entrance and departed at around 6:30am. If You are taking a day tour, I would advice you to depart Cebu at 5AM so you could have more time to enjoy Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort. When we arrived at Bancogon, Oslob, we were greeted with a refreshing ice cold Lemongrass Tea which is native to people in Oslob and a cold herby towel to freshen up after a long ride to the drop off point.

We then waited for a pumpboat(provided by the resort) to transport us to Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort. It takes around 15 minutes from the Oslob Drop off point to the beautiful Island of Sumilon!

The 15 minute pumboat ride made me more excited and jumpy more than ever during the whole trip. Though I was wishing the sun would give us hope for a good tan but the sun stayed dark and cloudy.

While storm Jolina is on her full force on the southwest of Visayas, we (on Central visayas) were experiencing stong winds, drizzles and big waves. But it wouldn't stop us from our excitement in our Sumilon island adventure which was about 8 mins ahead of us.

The pumpdoat toured us around the island giving us a preview of the scenic Sumilon Island. I also took pictures of the Oslob fisherfolks who were fishing. hehe
